Stepping into the cavern is rather like entering a cathedral – certainly the rush of reverence is comparable. As you explore this magnificent grotto, you will undoubtedly appreciate how the passage of time can work and shape a particular place.  Inside, you’ll find forged stone implements on display that archaeologists have determined are more than 100,000 years old.  The caves however, are much, much older.

There are seven halls within the cave system, that all told, span more than 20,000 square kilometres.  Stalactites and stalagmites rise and fall, creating soaring geographic sculptures. Lights have been added to enhance the colors of the stone, making it seem as if you are in a room made of precious gems. Sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and topazes paint the limestone cavern, etching out a variety of images and pictures and enhancing the naturally sculptured walls.

The route visitors walk is about 1.5 kilometers (or just under 1 mile) long and contains more than 700 steps.  Rivers and lakes ripple within the stone walls, carving out scenic areas that are sure to draw your attention.  As you make your way through this rocky kingdom, you’ll discover sites with names like Tianchi Flying Falls, Leifengta Pagoda, and Nantong, which means ‘Warm Cave’.

The Yingde Area

Whether you’re staying Yingde, or in a Qingyuan or Guangzhou hotel, you’ll find that there are many beautiful areas to explore in the surrounding countryside.  If you’re ready for more cosmopolitan pleasures, those are available as well. Perhaps you’d like to visit one of the many excellent restaurants in the area, explore the museums, or take a moonlight boat ride on the Pearl River.
