Close Animal Encounters At The Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens
December 9th, 2008 by Kitci WongKuala Lumpur or more popularly referred to as KL is such a vivacious city that comes alive because of the number of tourist destinations and admirable structures that you will find in the city. This is home to hundreds of expats and is visited by thousands of tourists each year. If you are more of an animal lover and would choose a trip to the zoo over a trip to the shopping mall then it is a good idea for you to head to the Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana) at Jalan Perdana. Escape the bustling city and make your way to the serene Lake Gardens that occupy about 60 hectares of land and was established in 1888. You can ride a boat and enjoy the gardens while rowing on the water, have a picnic, or visit other interesting parts of the gardens like the Bird Park, Butterfly Park, Deer Park etc.
KUALA LUMPUR BIRD PARK – TAMAN BURING KUALA LUMPUR
The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park was established in 1991. Bird lovers would have a field day when visiting the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. In this lovely park, you can find around 3, 000 colourful birds that belong to almost two hundred species all over the world. You can observe these birds in a landscaped setting that was constructed to mimic these birds’ natural environment. Birds include Flamingos, Hornbills, Macaws, Parrots, Pigeons, Ducks, etc that came from Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, South America, Southeast Asia, etc.
The KL Bird Park is divided into several areas like Hornbill Park, World of Parrots, Flamingo Pond, Waterfall Aviary, Amphitheatre, etc. If you are lucky, you just might catch the scheduled hornbill feeding which happens before 12:00 nn. There are also other bird feeding sessions like the Lorries Feeding, Ostrich Feeding, Eagles Feeding, Stork Feeding, etc. You can check the feeding schedule at the entrance so that you can catch all of them. Oh, don’t forget to get a brochure at the entrance to serve as your guide in touring the entire park.

KUALA LUMPUR BUTTERFLY PARK – TAMAN RAMA RAMA KUALA LUMPUR
If you have a personal liking for butterflies then that liking should be enough motivation for you to go out of your way and visit the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park and have your own close encounters with these wonderful creatures. Come to think of it, it would not take much effort from you to go to the Butterfly Park if you are at the KL Bird Park as these two parks are quite near each other.
The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is home to 6, 000 fluttering butterflies that belong to around 120 species. These butterflies will certainly color your world as they fly freely in their simulated natural environment in the park. The amazing mix of colors and patterns on the wings of these butterflies has made locals refer to them as “flying flowers.” Aside from observing the butterflies, you can also learn more about their interesting mating processes in the breeding area as well as their life cycle in the butterfly nursery. Visit the insect museum and buy little trinkets like local handicrafts or framed butterflies from the quaint souvenir shop that is located near the exit. That’s not all. You can also enjoy about 15, 000 exotic plants and fish ponds with colourful dancing kois that you can even feed.

KUALA LUMPUR DEER PARK – TAMAN RUSA KUALA LUMPUR
Another park that is near the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park. The gentle deer are known to be very intelligent. They can be elusive in the wild but it is quite easy to spot and observe them at the KL Deer Park where a number of them are just roaming around the lush green surroundings or feeding near the ponds.
You can see Malaysia’s famous deer, the mouse deer or locally called Kancil. There are also does and fawns that represent other deer species.
You can also see other types of animals in the Deer Park. Some people say that the Bird Park is much better than the Deer Park but I suggest that you visit both parks yourself and be the judge.

No need to worry about accommodation if you decide to visit KL. You can choose from so many accommodations and you will definitely find one that will suit your budget. If you would like to relax in style then you can stay at The Ascott Kuala Lumpur. This hotel is located in the central business district and is near shopping and entertainment stops. Enjoy your leisure stroll under the shady trees, feast your eyes on colourful butterflies and marvel at the delicate creatures. At the lake gardens, you can close your eyes and relax while listening to the melodic chirping of the birds. Take comfort in the thought that you are in an enchanting place and that these wonderful things do not happen everyday in your city lives.

Malaysia and Singapore is my next stop for 2009, hopefully by summer. I’ll make sure that I visit this place.
Just a question, when is the best time to visit Malaysia and Singapore?

Hello Herbie! I think you should avoid the rainy season and visit these wonderful countries during summer. As for me, I prefer to visit Singapore and Malaysia in August because these two countries celebrate their “Independence Days” during this month and … on a personal note… it is my birthday month
