Dazzling Floating Restaurant Of Hong Kong
May 8th, 2009 by Kitci WongThere is always something different to see and experience in Hong Kong. The standard Hong Kong itinerary would usually include one or two visits to amusement parks, food trips, and endless shopping sprees. Others prefer to just catch up with some rest and relaxation in any of the fine hotels in the city like the BP International Hong Kong which is located at Hong Kong Island. But there is another interesting attraction in Hong Kong that visitors must make time to see and visit. I am referring to Jumbo Kingdom.
If you find yourself at the south side of the Hong Kong Island then it will be quite easy for you to find Jumbo Kingdom, which is located at the Aberdeen Harbour. Coming from the other parts of Hong Kong, you would have to make your way to the Central MTR station and take bus numbers 70 or 75 from the Exchange Square that will bring you to the Shum Wan Shuttle Ferry Pier. You can also catch the bus at the Admiralty MTR Bus Terminal and this will bring you directly to the Aberdeen Shuttle Ferry Pier. The bus ride will not cost you more than HK$ 10.
Most tour packages that are available in various travel agencies would usually include a trip to Jumbo Kingdom. The Jumbo Kingdom is a progressive set of buildings that are perfect for sightseeing and trying out different tasty food. The place is almost always filled to the brim with tourists who would like to check out its different attractions or those who would like to capture the beauty of the place through photographs. Tourists can hire a boat for the harbour tour and to see how most locals in the area go about their daily lives also in their little owned boats.
The main attraction would have to be the Floating Restaurant which is considered as an important part of Hong Kong’s Tourism and claim to be the largest floating restaurant in the world. As a matter of fact, the floating restaurant is already considered as icon of Hong Kong and is visited not only by locals but most importantly by foreigners. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant was the idea of Dr. Stanley Ho and was opened to the public back in 1976. Since it has been operating for so many years already, it has already undergone a face lift and now projects a modern design. The restaurant is eye-catching mainly because of the intricate ornaments and exquisite design that would be fit for a grandiose Chinese Palace. A lot of important events and celebrations are held at the floating restaurant. Celebrities like Tom Cruise, Chow Yun Fat, etc have also visited the floating restaurant.
The floating restaurant actually specializes in various fresh seafood dishes, Peking Duck and assorted dim sum. This coming Mother’s Day and Father’s day, the restaurant has prepared a special promotional menu for all mothers and fathers. This promotion started last May 1 and will run until the last day of June 2009. This special menu is peppered with a wide array of delectable dishes which include the following: Barbecued Suckling Pig, Sautéed Scallop with Celery and Cashew Nuts, Deep Fried Mashed Pork and Shrimp, Braised Shark’s Fin Soup, Boiled Fresh Shrimp, Steamed Fresh Garoupa, Steamed Fresh Abalone, Spiced Soy Chicken, Fried Rice with Mashed Barbecued Pork, Stewed E-Fu Noodle with Crab Meat, Sweetened Red Bean Cream with Sago, Chinese Tea, six cans of Knight Beer and six cans of Aerated Water. Whoa, writing that definitely made my mouth water. The best part is that all these dishes will be offered for an affordable price of HK$ 1, 600 for a table of six persons and only HK$ 3, 080 for a table of twelve persons. Given that this menu is offered during a special occasion, the restaurant requires customers to make advanced reservations and bookings.
If you have no plans of dining at the Floating Restaurant and would only like to take souvenir photos then one of the best ways to enjoy the view would be to join a Sampan Harbour Tour. This tour can be availed at the Sham Wan Pier. The rates go for around HK$ 50 per person. A lot of tourists avail of this tour, which actually passes in front of the restaurant. There is even a stop over for guests to take all the pictures they want.
So if you find yourself in Hong Kong and cannot seem to get enough of Hong Kong’s marvelous sights, head over to Jumbo Kingdom and prepare to be dazzled!

I visited the Jumbo in 1991 on new years when I was in the US Navy. It was totally enjoyable, the food was outstanding, and prices… you just can’t beat them! I am looking forward to a return trip to Hong Kong, and to take my new wife to see things that I have only been able to describe to her, one of which is an outstanding night out with a trip to JUMBO!
