Six Great Cities For Street Photography

January 25th, 2011 by

Travel photographers may have the best equipment and years of experience but the choice of subject matter can spell the difference between a successful photo shoot and a drab one. Some cities are perpetually beloved by photographers for the richness of their visual impact and the variety of contrasting elements they offer.

Here are six cities around the world that give street photography a good name.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong

This dynamic economic centre is a sparkling jewel from afar and a startling contrast of oriental and occidental influences. Nothing captures the magnificence of the city like the view from the Kowloon side at night, as the mighty edifices blot out the darkness with sparkling radiance. Walking the streets of Hong Kong offers glimpses of historic temples, modern skyscrapers and British colonial sites together with dazzling commercial establishments. Finally, the sheer density of the island means you can snap away as soon as you step out of your Hong Kong hotel.

San Francisco

San Francisco offers vibrant hilly ‘hoods and great architecture – both a delight to any photographer. Visit Ghirardelli Square for a dramatic shot of Alcatraz Island or go to Fort Point for an inspiring view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Finally, enjoy the street scene in funky Castro or mix or the busy vibe in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Paris

As one of the birthplaces of photography, Paris is forever a photographer’s mecca. From classic landmarks to booksellers by the Seine, there is little in the French capital that does not merit being caught on camera.

Berlin

Berlin

Hotels in Berlin offer access to personality brilliant monuments and museums. With so many distinct districts within the city limits, photographers can completely change the nature of their street scene depending on which subway station they get off. Classic Berlin is the Brandenburg Gate and UNESCO World Heritage Museum Island, bohemian art galleries and alternative nightlife.

Bustling streets, heritage sites and religious structures make the sprawling Egyptian capital a must-visit destination for avid photographers. Whether taking pictures from an outdoor café or lazily sailing down the Nile, every minute begs to be captured. Wait until sunset to catch a glimpse of the Great Pyramids of Giza at a distance.

Istanbul

Istanbul

Europe and Asia meet in magnificent Istanbul and every street corner shows influences from both continents. Empires have grown and died here, leaving their splendid monuments behind, like the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque. Stroll down the Egyptian Bazaar for a glimpse of history as vendors and buyers haggle amidst merchandise, or simply cruise along the Bosphorus to take in the majesty of the city. Make necessary travel arrangements to different photo spots with your Istanbul hotel.
