The Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep’s location was chosen by a sacred white elephant which carried a relic of the holy Buddha strapped on its back. The elephant roamed until it circled one specific spot, trumpeted, lied down and eventually died. King Geu Na ordered that the Golden Chedi be build on the exact spot where the sacred white elephant took its last breath.
